Learning how to play guitar music for beginners starts by learning how to read the guitar chords, sheet music or the guitar tabs. There are actually two standard musical notations for guitars, these are the sheet music and the guitar tablature or also known as tabs. Both of which have guitar chords embedded in it. The guitar chords enable the player of the guitar to change the note to be able to play the song according to its tone.

The guitar tabs will help you visualize where to put your chords finger when playing guitar music for beginners. The sheet music, on the other hand, enables the player to see the song in its entirety. It gives you the time signature of the piece so you will know how to count the rhythm.

In learning guitar music for beginners, it is best to play an easy song first before you move to the harder ones. This way, you will be able to memorize the basic chords first. Also, you will learn how to transfer your fingers from one chord to the next. Strumming along easy songs is ideal for beginners. Once you finish an entire song using the guitar, it will add more confidence to your playing capability.

Some people learning guitar music for beginners undergo formal training. For those who would like to take this path, you need to be serious since you will be cashing out a lot of dollars to do so. One on one instructors or enrolling in a guitar lesson class is expensive compared to just learning to play the guitar on your own. With the money comes the speed of learning. When you are learning from the experts, you tend to imbibe their expertise and learn quicker than just practicing on your own. Also, you will be in constant scrutiny of your instructor so you are motivated to do well.

In formal lessons, you will learn how to play the guitar chords. You will know the proper placement of the fingers in specific chords of the guitar. The instructor will also teach you how to read the sheet music and the guitar tablature.

As you progress, you will notice that any music sheet you face, you can suddenly hear the notes in your head and then play it on your guitar, even if it is the first time you hear of the song. This is the advantage of learning guitar chord, reading the sheet music and the tabs. Plus the fact the playing the guitar is considered as cool does not hurt either.

I have always loved acoustic guitar music, especially if the artist knows the intricacies of complex melodic harmonies. Phil Keaggy is one of the top guitarists in the world, and has recorded over fifty albums. He’s a musical genius who is unbelievably humble. I was blessed to watch an interview with him today and it made me remember why I love music. It also made my spirit soar to hear him say, I was 100% musician, and then when I was born again, I belonged to Jesus before I belonged to my guitar. I feel, you can have Jesus without music and have peace. Conversely, if your music is without the Lord, your life, in my opinion, goes nowhere.

Talking specifically about his instrumental albums, he said, I’ve done a couple instrumental albums. One is still waiting in the wings, and this one, The Song Within. It has a lot of flavors of the Master and the Musician. There’s a thread that’s been woven throughout all the years, a melodic thread, and I think it comes from the same heart and spirit I have. It’s like it says even though our outer man decays, our inner man is renewed day by day. Jesus never gets old.

Phil Keaggy is one of the most admired guitarists in music today. His fans range from those who aspire just to be able to play Keaggy’s mistakes, to professional musicians who have been strongly influenced by his style. And in between are those who don’t play guitar, yet find solace in his beautifully penned lyrics and memorable melodies.

Phil’s solo career has spanned more than thirty years, and has included over fifty solo albums, both vocal and instrumental, as well as 8 releases with his band, Glass Harp. One of the most sought after studio guitarists, Phil also continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumental compositions.

Born on March 23, 1951 in Youngstown, OH, the ninth of ten children, Phil grew up in a home filled with music. On Phil’s 10th birthday, his brother, Dave returned home with a Sears Silvertone guitar. That’s when the magic began.

Phil spent most of his younger days involved in music, and at the young age of 13, he joined his very first band, the Keytones. He later went on to join such local groups as The Vertices, The Squires, and the Volume Four, who later changed their name to New Hudson Exit.

But in 1970 everything changed. Phil’s band Glass Harp (with childhood friend John Sferra – now a dedicated Christian – on drums, and Dan Pecchio on bass) recorded their self-titled first album and people really began to take notice of this incredibly gifted guitar player.

By 1972, Phil saw his life going in a different direction, and made the tough decision to leave Glass Harp and pursue a solo career. His first solo album, What A Day was recorded in just a week’s time during January 1973. He married his sweetheart Bernadette that summer, and the following year, they moved to Upstate New York and joined a Church community called Love Inn.

During his years there, Phil took a break from recording his own music. It wasn’t until three years later in 1976 that Phil would record his second solo album, Love Broke Thru, which was soon followed by a string of albums, including the much-acclaimed instrumental album, The Master And The Musician.

With the Christian Music industry really beginning to grow, Phil won his very first Dove award in 1988 for his instrumental album, The Wind and the Wheat. Phil’s second Dove Award came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, Beyond Nature. Each year from 1998 to 2001, Phil has dominated the Instrumental Record category at the Doves, winning for Invention, Acoustic Sketches, Majesty and Wonder, and most recently Lights of Madrid. For three years in a row, Phil was voted one of the top fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers.

On May 07, 2007 – Phil completed an album for the Green Hill Music label called Acoustic Cafe. This CD featured Phil performing covers of some all-time classics from the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Fleetwood Mac, and many more.

On August15, 2007 – Phil’s album, Beyond Nature was voted #3 on the Top 100 Greatest Acoustic Guitar Albums and on September17, 2007 – Phil was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

These days, Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performing primarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band. He is aware that God gave him a calling to deliver the Gospel through his music, and for over 30 years, Phil Keaggy has been grateful to do just that, and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come. I certainly hope so! I’m waiting for his next album with baited breath!

I’ve said this elsewhere, I’m not very good at naming songs. no ‘name’ ever seems to fit right. I usually end up naming a group of song all at once when the album is being recorded. So when I named this song I remembered way back when I first started playing it the subway how different it was…and all the changes it went through to become the finished version… a lot of my songs tend to evolve…and this particular one, at that particular time, seemed to have evolved the most. *** whats up with the effects? i don’t like the flashes or the effects either.

First thing I want to tell you that, if you want to play guitar, you must be diligent. You can’t be good if you don’t practice, it takes a long time to be good at guitar. So let’s start!

1 .Get to know your guitar

There are 2 kinds of guitar:Acoustic guitar,Electric guitar.

Acoustic guitar

Electric Guitar

Acoustic guitar and Electric guitar has the same way to play but the sound of Acoustic guitar is produced from its strings and the Electric guitar’s sound is from the Pickup plug in to an Amplifier.Strings use for Acoustic guitar are Nylon strings and Steel strings,Electric guitar uses Steel strings. But if you’re beginner, you should learn to play an Acoustic first.

2.Learn music theory

Strings:A guitar usually has 6 strings:EBGDAE

E-1:the thinnest,highest

B-2

G-3

D-4

A-5

E-6:the thickest,lowest

Frets:Fret or fret board is where you place your fingers and play the note. The pitch between 2 frets is a half step interval. So what is a half step? For example:Place your finger on the 1st fret of the 6th string, play it,it’ll be F,move to the 2nd fret,it’ll be F#.Let’s see:

                         A – A#/Bb – B – C – C#/Db – D – D#/Eb – E – F – F#/Gb – G – G#/Ab – A

A to A#/Bb is a half step

A to B is a whole step

B to C,E to F is a half step

3.Guitar Tuning

Another important thing is to keep your guitar in tune. This will help you play the note sounded exactly. The standard tuning is EBGDAE.This means you don’t fret the note, just play the strings from 1 to 6 it’ll be EBGDAE.You just need to hear the sound of E string(thick or thin is okay) that is in tune,I’ll choose the thick, follow this:

The 6th string at the 5th fret with the 5th string is the same.

The 5th string at the 5th fret with the 4th string

The 4th string at the 5th fret with the 3rd string

The 3rd string at the 4th fret with the 2nd string

The 2nd string at the 5th fret with the 1st string

4.How to read tablature or tab

————————–0———0———E

———————0————–0———B

—————-0——————-0———G

————2———————–2———D

——-2—————————-2———A

—0——————————–0———E

The number on the line is the number of the fret you have to place your finger on.”2″ means 2nd fret and “0″ means open string(unfretted). If the numbers on the strings are faraway each other, you’ll play each note but if it’s in alignment with each other, you must strum it.This is a very basic of reading tab because there are more an more symbols and techniques you have to learn.Tab is a fast way and easy way for beginners to read notes.

5.Practice

This is the most important. The more you practice the better you play. You must practice every day, regularly, start from playing chord and then songs, techniques, scale,…You must arranged your time to practice and have a good result.

Start playing now. The greatest of the great started becoming acquainted with their guitars as soon as they could get their hands on one, although there are many great guitarists who didn’t even touch a guitar until their teens (Clapton for example) or even older (Glenn Tipton AND K.K. Downing, both of the guitarists for Judas Priest. Tom Scholz of Boston is also a good example, because he began playing at age 20) But even if you are a teen but have never held a guitar before, it’s never too late to be a guitar god, so don’t be discouraged. The point is to start playing as early as you can. Stop making excuses, stop saying you need the perfect guitar (You should always start out with a simple guitar, and move on to more complicated guitars as your skills begin to develop), stop waiting to be “inspired,” and stop wasting another minute to learn how to develop your inner guitar god. There’s no reason to wait.

There’s a very good chance that you will not be good at first. Everyone has to start out being bad, so they can improve from there. Think of it this way – babies are terrible at walking, little children struggle with talking. But they keep doing it, without feeling bad about themselves. Eventually those babies grow up to kick you in the face and insult your mother.
Can’t afford a nice guitar? For now, buy an inexpensive guitar when you first start. You only need to get comfortable with the new movements with your fingers. It’s only a temporary measure (see Warnings) but it’s better than nothing!

Practice until your fingers bleed. — Okay, maybe bleeding fingers aren’t the smartest way to go (see Tips), but you get the idea. Eddie Van Halen used to walk around his house with the guitar strapped on and unplugged, practicing incessantly; he’d sit on his bed for hours on end with a guitar while other people went to parties. Are you ready and willing to do the same? Get your priorities straight and learn to multitask. It’s all about dedication and discipline.
Surround yourself with talented musicians. Ever heard the sayings, “greatness breeds greatness” or “you are who you hang around”? Both statements are true. If you want to be a guitar god, you have to play with the best guitar players you can find. You will learn more in a month playing with an accomplished guitar player than you will in a year practicing by yourself. If you don’t know any off hand, go meet some. Go to local shows and introduce yourself to the guitarists or connect with local musicians online.

Be precise. Just because you’re starting doesn’t give you an excuse to be sloppy. Like in Tai Chi, if you practice very slowly with 100 percent concentration, you’ll become five times faster and better; so when you practice, do it slowly and concentrate. You’ll be amazed at the results.

If you don’t have an experienced instructor or high quality equipment, this may be difficult, but you have to be a stickler for technique. Do your homework and ask questions. Be persistent. If you know someone who’s an excellent guitar player, don’t be shy. Walk up to them with the guitar strapped on, politely request a moment of their time, and ask them if your finger placement for a particular chord or technique is correct. Most experts, when they see an error, are compelled to correct it out of their love of the art.
Study your idols. Listen to other guitarists’ riffs and solos and learn them.
Some techniques that are worth learning:

Harmonics and pinch harmonics
Palm muting
Vibrato
Hammer ons/pull offs.

Scales you should be familiar with:

Major and minor
Be able to play scales forwards as well as backwards, moving from scale to scale in a given key
Pentatonic major and minor (in all the positions, so you can easily move in your solos)

Learn how to read guitar tab. Guitar tab is the guitarist’s form of sheet music. Becoming a great guitar player means learning the ins and outs of some of music’s best guitar ballads. You can search the web for tabs. If you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. A few to begin with: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Joe Perry, Keith Richards, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Johnny Greenwood, Jimmy Page, and John Mayer. Learn a few of each of their greatest songs and don’t forget to play them slowly until you get them down.
Study classical music. It may seem worlds apart from the music you envision yourself playing, but practically all of the guitar geniuses that you look up to have studied classical technique at one point or another. Malmsteen, for example, was heavily influenced by 19th century violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini. In the process of adapting Paganini concerto pieces on guitar, he fostered a prodigious technical fluency that would later make jaws drop. Additionally, Eddie Van Halen began his musical aspirations with classical piano before he discovered the freedom of guitar. Randy Rhoads was an avid player and listener of classical music.

Learn the ins and outs of reading music. Sure, Stevie Ray Vaughan was amazing and he didn’t know how to read music, but if you just sit down and learn to read and transpose music, you will be much better off. Not only will you know what sounds good, you will know how to put it into writing and you will learn deeper elements of music. Music is not just the notes you are playing, but the pause between notes and the composition of good music.
Understand chord theory. Learn as many chords and inversions as you can. Become familiar with how they sound and why you use them. Even if you aren’t playing jazz, (where you would typically hear many of these chords), knowing the notes and sounds of these chords can make your soloing more interesting. Some of the greatest rock guitar solos are actually very jazz-influenced.
Play with emotion. Once you’ve developed proficiency, you can use the guitar for freedom of expression. You can feel the music in your blood, and make other people feel it, too. Remember, the greatest musicians of all time, the ones who are most deeply respected, are the ones who could move others, physically or emotionally, with their music. Music is a form of communication, if you have something to express, do your best to produce what you hear or feel. Believe you can become a breath-taking guitarist — it makes such a difference if you know you will be brilliant.
Tips
Take care of your hands. Before and after you play do warm-up and cool-down sessions with your fingers. Do regular hand exercises with both hands as this helps with all situations with the guitar. Keep your fingernails as short as possible as this helps grip the strings more easily.
You may or may not find it helpful to keep the fingernails on your right hand a little long, as they produce a different tone when fingerpicking.
Take care of your guitar. Check it regularly and clean it. Get any parts fixed if broken or not working properly.
Play with a metronome – it’s much easier to play with other people if you are used to playing in time (on Windows, Media Player 10 can do this). Learn something at a slow tempo and then slowly increase the tempo setting.
Obtain some inexpensive software to slow down MP3 files without changing the pitch. You can then slow down songs (or portions of songs) on your computer as slow as you need to. This is critical in order to understand more complex ideas, and is great for ear training.
Another good tip is to learn to follow the rhythm. Many people who are starting have problems with staying on time. You can learn to follow rhythms by just making noises with your hand, for example, by tapping a book.
Don’t start with hard things. Start with easy tabs and chords. If you start with hard things, you are more likely to get frustrated and leave playing guitar soon after starting.
It is helpful to start with thinner strings and a low action to get your fingers used to fingering when its easier, then when you get better you can change these aspects to create more resonance.
A good idea is to get guitar lessons, if there are any available in your area. It is better to learn actual techniques from an actual teacher, rather then to fool around with the guitar or to learn online (the information may not always be 100% accurate)
Warnings
Playing on a cheap guitar has its own set of problems that you have to watch out for. A bad enough guitar can create bad habits, like pressing so hard you make all the notes sharp; like avoiding the use of correct fingering (to favor “stronger” fingers); like avoiding some chords and notes because they sound bad on poorly dressed frets; like ruining your pitch perception with a poorly cut nut or warped neck that will never play in tune. Also, low-quality guitars make lots of people quit because what they are playing sounds bad and they assume it’s their fault when it isn’t. A dead fret is a dead fret. You can put a vise on it and it won’t matter. So consider these issues when you’re thinking about how much money you should invest into a guitar. Remember, Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page once said that a beginning guitarist should buy a nice guitar because better equipment fosters better technique. But only do this if you know you can stay committed to playing guitar.
One big problem with many cheap guitars is that the action, or how far the strings are from the fingerboard, is too high. This makes it tough to fret notes and you may end up pressing too hard. However, this problem is easy to solve. Just take your guitar to a guitar shop and they will lower the action, often for free. If they charge, ask whether they do the work in-house or send it out; in the latter case, find out who the real luthier is and establish a relationship with at least one expert guitar technician.
If you have a demanding practice regimen and have a break, work yourself back into it gradually or you may injure yourself.
Things You’ll Need
A guitar – Test out the guitars in the store to see which produces a sound you like. Not all guitars sound the same, and that doesn’t mean that they are out of tune.(Remember all guitars are different.)
A tuner (get one with electric guitar inputs, so if you end up loving it you won’t have to make another purchase)
A variety of picks
A Metronome
Guitar case (many guitars will come with one)
Strap (optional-it’s easier to sit when you’re beginning)
Stereo
CDs (or LPs) of your favourite bands and/or iPod or MP3 player containing as many songs by your favourite bands as you can get hold of
Capo(great for changing pitch)
When you purchase an electric guitar you’ll need:
An amplifier
Instrument cable

Optional Items:
A multiple effects rack OR as many of the following as you wish to get…
Note on effects: They are there to add atmosphere and make your music sound a bit nicer or edgier, they do NOT MAKE the music. It’s recommended that you don’t experiment with these too much until you can make music and get good tone without them. For example, you shouldn’t become reliant on using distortion, as it can be a cover for sloppy technique.
Wah pedal
Distortion pedal(depending on your style and your amp)
Chorus
Flanger
Digital Delay and/or Echo
Talkbox
A guitar stand or open area to display your guitar, you’ll be much more motivated to play and practice if your guitar is available and visible.

A Tutorial CD (If you have one, and this will greatly improve on your guitar skills)

    Cleaning

One of the best tips is one of the easiest. Clean your guitar on a regular basis. Dirt, grease and other gunk builds up, not only on guitar strings, but also on the fretboard. This can make the neck sticky and gross, which makes playing difficult.
Before playing your guitar, clean your hands with instant hand sanitizer to get rid of the dirt, grease and grime that will quickly build up and compromise your strings and fretboard. You can wash your hands with soap and water, but soap has a tendency to soften your hands and fingernails, which can be bad for playing.

String Maintenance

After playing your guitar, wipe it down with a soft cloth or towel. You want to scrub the entire length of each guitar string. Check with your local guitar store for a simple guitar-cleaning kit. A string lubricant, such as Fast Fret, will keep your strings and frets slick and shiny, and will make them last longer.

Storage

Get a hard-shell case to store your guitar in. Make sure the case fits your exact guitar well, as not every case will fit every guitar. Even if the salesperson at the guitar store swears your guitar will fit in a particular case, make sure the case supplies adequate support and protection for your guitar.
Many people use soft cases (or “gig bags”). Soft cases are better than nothing, but a hard case is ideal. It’s worth your money to spend more and get the hard-shell case.
Invest in a guitar stand. If you don’t have a guitar stand, your guitar will more than likely end up leaning up against a wall or lying on the ground when you aren’t playing it. This is bad for your guitar, and can lead to accidents and mishaps. A guitar stand will provide your instrument with the proper support and will keep your guitar from warping or getting tripped over.

Temperature

Never leave your guitar in your car overnight. Not only is this a great way to get your instrument stolen, but the temperature inside your car is usually a bad temperature for your guitar. Too much heat and direct sunlight can make your guitar’s finish fade or even crack. Cold temperatures can damage the neck and the inlays, as well as the truss rod.
If you’re serious about keeping your guitar in great condition, get a guitar humidifier. Especially important for acoustic guitars, a guitar humidifier can also be beneficial for electric guitars. A guitar humidifier is a small device that fits in your acoustic guitar’s sound hole, but you can also place a guitar humidifier in the case with your electric guitar. This will help keep your guitar at a constant humidity level, which can add years to the life of your guitar.
